In its early European history, the seaside suburb of Sandgate was a popular getaway for Brisbane residents, a place for holidays and day trips. Originally known as Cabbage Tree Creek, the area was later surveyed and renamed Sandgate. While several stories exist about the origin of the name, the most widely accepted is that it was inspired by Sandgate in Kent, England, another coastal township.
Following the first official land sales in 1853, early settlers quickly developed Sandgate as a destination for visitors. One of the area’s first landholders, Charles Davie, established the Belvedere Hotel, while William Loudin opened the Sandgate Hotel in 1862. Around the same time, John Baxter operated the Cabbage Tree Creek Café, catering to travellers and holidaymakers.
By the late 1860s, Sandgate had become a well-known seaside retreat, with cottages advertised for rent and a growing number of accommodation houses, including Villa Marina, Belair and Musgrave.
Sandgate’s growth continued throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, supported by improved transport, local infrastructure, and a thriving, connected community.
Our School Since 1873
Sandgate State School has been at the heart of the local community since its establishment in 1873, when the first classes were held in the chapel of the Baptist Church under the guidance of founding teacher W.R. Barfoot.
A permanent school building was constructed in 1874, marking the beginning of a long and proud tradition of education in Sandgate. For more than 150 years, the school has grown alongside the community, adapting to change while remaining committed to providing a high-quality, inclusive education for every student.
Today, Sandgate State School continues to honour its rich history while embracing innovation and future-focused learning. Strong community connections, a commitment to student wellbeing, and a focus on academic success remain central to the school’s identity.
